Our battlefield walks are a great option for those wishing to spend less time on the coach, and more time exploring the battlefield terrain on foot.
Many key landmarks and cemeteries in Ypres and Somme are located close to one another, so walking between these places allows students to follow the actual paths soldiers had taken - linking geography with historical narrative.
Exploring on foot also allows students to reflect upon their surroundings and better comprehend the harsh conditions where soliders once fought - whether it be the mud, the inclines, or the distances between key sites.
Our expert guides will take your students on fascinating journey through time, connecting these sites with personal stories and bringing the past to life in a unique and immersive way.
Take a look at our 3-day Battlefield Walks sample itinerary, where you'll find the full selection of visits available to include in your history tour.
Your guided tour will incorporate the following key study themes to support your learning back in the classroom.
There's more to our battlefields trips than gaining a deeper understanding of the impact of WWI. We can include a variety of alternative and fun experiences to provide opportunities for cultural immersion, student bonding, and a change of pace from the more poignant elements of your tour. Take a look at below for inspiration, or contact us for more ideas - we're happy to offer suggestions for your group!
The Last Post is a daily event that has been held since 1928, demonstrating the enduring importance of remembrance and the lasting impact of World War I.
Every evening at exactly 8pm, traffic is stopped from passing under the Menin Gate to allow the buglers to play their simple but moving tribute to the memory of the soldiers who fought and died over one hundred years ago.
The daily ceremony is free and open to everyone, without the need for prior reservation. However, if you would like to take part in a wreath laying, we can arrange this for you, so please let us know in advance if you are interested in doing this.
Attending the ceremony and if you choose to, participating in a wreath-laying, is an excellent opportunity for students to connect with the scale of loss and sacrifice in their own personal way. Watch the short video about the Last Post to find out more about the ceremony.
At Anglia we care about our customers, our staff, the places we visit, the stories we tell and the organisations we work with. These key principles define who we are and what we do. We believe they are also the reason why Anglia is the market leader in fully-guided history trips for UK schools. We work with you to design a bespoke tour which meets the specific needs of your school and which supports what you are teaching in class. We start by asking what you want your students to see and what you want them to experience then build the tour around these requirements. A tour which, as the testimonials on our website show, your students will find thought-provoking, engaging and enjoyable.
