The subject of Climate Change could not be higher on the agenda for educators. Earth Summit is a highly informative and engaging event for all key stage 4 & 5 students, with strong links to a range of examination board specifications.
Earth Summit is a 2-day event, that will provide students with a chance to take part in a wide-ranging examination of the factors causing Climate Change, the effects it is having on biodiversity and how we all could live more sustainably at home, at school and in the community.
The event will open with a series of engaging presentations from experts in the Climate Change industry. Giving your students unique insights into what inspired them to become pioneers and campaigners in the area, they will no doubt pass on their passion for this important cause.
Speakers for 2024 will be confirmed soon. To give you a flavour of what to expect, in 2023 were joined by:
Senior Geography Lecturer
Senior Lecturer in School of Geography, Geology and Environment
Programmes Coordinator at Force of Nature, a youth non-profit organisation mobilising mindsets for climate action
From the largest European entertainments company operating in Europe; Merlin Entertainments
In the afternoon there will be time for you to take part in 2 hands on workshops with experts who are currently making a huge difference working in the climate change industry. This hands on experience can enlighten your students in career paths in sustainability.
Workshops will be confirmed in early 2024. Here is a taste of some of the workshops students enjoyed in 2024
Following a 30 minute pre-event webinar, students were set the challenge to work in teams to put together a plan of how professionals from different sectors could work together to address an environmental challenge in the workshop, such as poor air quality, water pollution or the impact of waste plastic in the oceans’
In this workshop, students learnt how to understand the relationship between mental health, mindset and climate change; identify the barriers to taking action; hone in on the problem they want to solve and get clear on their vision of the future.
Students learnt about the power of plasma and Fusion Energy and how UKAEA are looking to create a ‘star in a jar’ to provide near limitless sustainable energy.
Aside from benefiting your students’ knowledge and raising their social and personal awareness, taking them to an event such as the Earth Summit helps schools and colleges meet the following statutory Gatsby Benchmarks for Good Career Guidance:
4 Benchmark 4: Linking curriculum learning to careers
4 Benchmark 5: Encounters with employers and employees
4 Benchmark 7: Encounters with further & higher education
Attending Earth Summit 2023 will help inspire students towards
further study, help them to understand enough about the world of work to know what skills they need to succeed and open students’ eyes to careers they may not have considered.
Our event will take place at Keele University, which is leading the sector in sustainability, not just in their ambitions to become carbon neutral by 2030 but also through their teaching and groundbreaking research into climate change and renewable technologies.
They are proud to be one of the first UK universities to declare a 'climate emergency', as well as having ambitious carbon neutral. With Keele having all the elements of a small town, their campus acts as a ‘living laboratory’ for groundbreaking projects.
