As a city that has opened up its turbulent past, History Degree and Foundation students will find a wealth of museums, monuments and memorable sites that are all easily accessible, meaning you can cover a lot in a short space of time. Many museums are often free or low cost for students meaning you can keep the cost down on your visit.
Guided tours with local historians are often a great way to orientate yourself around the city whilst seeing the location on many significant events in German and World History.
When it comes to Nazi Germany the Jewish Museum or a visit to Sachsenhausen will provide poignant memorials that will encourage empathy and emotion. Should you focus on more recent times there are some major museums dedicated to life in East Germany, such as the DDR Museum, Palace of Tears or the former Stasi Prison where you can develop an understanding the life of ordinary people.
